Magic mushrooms in the kitchen: the benefits of cooking with magic mushrooms

Anyone who has ever tried magic mushrooms, fresh or dried, knows that the taste is not really something to be proud of. Some people can tolerate them, but others have trouble swallowing them. If you still want to use magic mushrooms, fortunately there is something you can do about it: cook with magic mushrooms. With some creativity in the kitchen, you can make dishes that ensure that the taste is well masked. Cook with magic mushrooms is fun and brings many benefits.

    Magic mushrooms in the kitchen

Mushrooms are healthy: they provide proteins, large amounts of polysaccharides, and they have medicinal properties. Magic mushrooms are known for their mind-altering properties, but not so much for their delicious taste. Still, it's a good idea to start using them in the kitchen, precisely because you can mask their bitter and somewhat unpleasant taste. If your dose of magic mushrooms is in a tasty dish, you can enjoy a nice meal and then a nice trip.

Cooking with magic mushrooms has several benefits: it can counteract the nausea that is common with magic mushrooms. If you choose the right ingredients in your magic mushroom dish, you can mask the taste. In addition, the trip can be a lot milder, which is a pleasant side effect for some people. However, you can also see this as a disadvantage.

The fact that the trip is less intense is due to several reasons. First, you combine the mushrooms with other foods. This will make the psilocybin(the mind-altering substance in magic mushrooms) partly digested in the stomach. Part of the substance is therefore lost, and that ensures a milder trip. Second, it's about heat. If you are going to cook with mushrooms, it is good to know that psilocybin is broken down at temperatures higher than 72 degrees. If you want to prevent that, you should not heat the dish too much.

Cooking with mushrooms: What can you combine them with?

If you want to make a tasty dish with mushrooms, it is useful to combine them with spices, fruit and other products that have a strong taste. Some combinations are very tasty. By the way, you can also use truffles instead of magic mushrooms.

    • Ginger (strong taste, but this spice also combats nausea, so ideal to combine with mushrooms)
    • Sour: lemon, lime or vinegar. Acidic products help convert psilocybin into psilocin in your body. By using acidic ingredients, you accelerate the conversion and the trip starts faster.
    • Honey: the sweet taste of honey helps to counteract the bitter taste of magic mushrooms. Another advantage is that your magic mushrooms have a longer shelf life if you make magic mushrooms honey.
    • Cocoa: An advantage of cocoa is that it combines well with magic mushrooms and has no negative influence on the effect of the trip.
    • Sugar: gives a sweet taste to your dish and provides your body with energy. However, it can speed up your digestion and therefore the absorption of psychoactive substances. It may be that for that reason, your trip will start faster and be over sooner.

    Dosing magic mushrooms

There is a big difference between taking mushrooms separately or ingesting them in a dish. If you are used to using magic mushrooms, you should keep in mind that you cannot use the same dose as normal. The rule of thumb is that the more nutrition you take at the same time as your mushrooms, the less great the effect of the mushrooms will be. So you can take a higher dose.

Furthermore, raw magic mushrooms have a superfast effect on an empty stomach. If you eat them in combination with other foods, it takes much longer before you notice anything. Sometimes it can take an hour or more. So don't eat more because you think it won't work, wait until at least an hour has passed. If you are new to magic mushrooms, start with a low dose and see how you react to it.

Tips for magic mushrooms in the kitchen

Cooking with mushrooms or truffles is a lot of fun, and you can make delicious dishes with them. Recipes are easy to find on the web and even on our site. Below you will find useful tips to get started with magic mushrooms in the kitchen.

    Use fresh mushrooms

The taste of fresh mushrooms is reasonable well tolerated for most people. For example, you can use them in a salad. Use tasty, fresh ingredients, such as fruits, nuts and seeds. Blueberries seem to go well with magic mushrooms in terms of taste. You can also make a tasty and healthy snack from yogurt, mushrooms and blueberries. Add some honey for some extra sweetness.

Another good option to process your mushrooms in is a sauce, for example tomato sauce with mushrooms for over the pasta. Make the fresh sauce, let it cool down and add chopped mushrooms. You can also make pesto and add mushrooms to it.

    Dried mushrooms

If you want to use dried mushrooms, it is good to take into account that they do have a fairly strong and less pleasant taste. So you taste them faster than you mix them whole into a dish. Before use, cut them into small pieces or grind them into a powder. That way, it's easier to cover up the taste. Dried mushrooms can be processed well in a sauce. Let the sauce stand for a while after you've added the mushrooms. They will then absorb some moisture and with it the taste of the dish. If you don't, you will most likely still be able to taste the magic mushroom powder.

It is also very tasty and fun to make, magic mushroom chocolate. All you need to do is melt some chocolate. Prepare a deep plate or use bonbon molds. Sprinkle some mushroom powder in this (make sure you try to distribute this as evenly as possible, so that each piece of chocolate has the same strength) and pour the melted chocolate over it. Add extra ingredients, such as vanilla essence, dried fruit pieces, nuts or lemon zest, so you can make your own favorite magic mushroom chocolate.
