How can you recover faster from a hangover?

It's a pity that after a night out or a fun party, you wake up the next day with a hangover. Your head seems to burst, you're nauseous and you just feel sick. Almost everyone has experienced it at some point. Is it possible to recover from a hangover faster? With our tips, you can at least alleviate the complaints and get rid of them faster.

    What exactly is a hangover?

On special occasions, you sometimes drink more than is wise. But many people think that alcohol makes an evening with others just that little bit more fun. And a glass too many is quickly drunk. Unfortunately, your body does suffer. Usually you get complaints 8 to 12 hours after drinking, which we call a hangover. These arise because your water balance is disturbed and because toxins are released and accumulate when alcohol is broken down in your body.

Your body can only break down a limited amount of alcohol. It takes about an hour and a half per glass to break down the alcohol. This process takes place in two steps: first, ethanol is converted into acetaldehyde. This requires the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). Acetaldehyde is then converted into acetic acid, which requires the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). These processes take place in the liver.

But why do you start to feel so bad after drinking a lot of alcohol? This is due to several factors. First, your water balance is disrupted. The alcohol makes you pee out too much water, which makes you dehydrated. In addition, the intermediate product acetaldehyde accumulates if you drink a lot. The necessary enzymes become saturated, they can no longer cope with the work. Finally, alcohol is an irritant, which irritates your stomach. Enough reasons why alcohol can make you feel quite ill.

    Symptoms of a hangover

You had a bit of a drink the night before. You wake up and you feel sick. The most common symptoms of a hangover are:

    • Dry mouth and feeling very thirsty
    • Headache
    • Feeling weak and tired
    • Hypersensitivity to stimuli
    • Nausea, abdominal pain, possibly even vomiting
    • Having difficulty concentrating

A lot of people feel broke because of a hangover. Fortunately, we help you to recover from it faster with the following tips.

Tips to recover faster from a hangover

Do you ever suffer from a hangover? Try not to make a habit of this. But do you wake up with a pounding head because you had a fun party the night before? Then use the tips below!

    Drink lots of water

One of the main causes of the horrible feeling of a hangover is a lack of fluid in your body. Because you are dehydrated, it is therefore important to replenish your fluids. It is best to drink water as soon as you wake up. Keep drinking well throughout the day. Are you very nauseous and is it difficult to drink water? Drink small sips and possibly add a slice of lemon or cucumber to your water. Then you can tolerate it better.

Sweet drinks or energy drinks are also a good option. These contain sugar, minerals and vitamins, which your body can use well. Sometimes you feel a lot better after drinking an energy drink, so you can try if this also applies to you.

Recover faster from a hangover with a good breakfast

A good breakfast is also important to recover faster from a hangover (or a brunch or lunch, depending on what time you get up). Make sure your meal contains a lot of carbohydrates and proteins. A sandwich with honey can help: the honey contains substances that ensure that the alcohol can be broken down more quickly. Also take a piece of fruit that contains a lot of vitamin C (such as a kiwi). Vitamin C helps to detoxify the liver and alcohol has caused your body to excrete a lot of vitamin C.

Eggs are also a good way to support your body during a hangover. They contain cysteine. This is an amino acid that your body needs to make glutathione (an antioxidant). It is precisely this substance that is removed from your body with the alcohol, while helping your body to break down acetaldehyde. If you're really too nauseous to eat, stick to something light, like toast or crackers.

    Painkillers

Of course, painkillers can also help. You can have a splitting headache from a hangover. This can really ruin your day. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You will probably feel a lot better soon.

    Use natural supplements

Want to recover faster from a hangover, you can also use natural supplements. These contain substances that can help your body to drain the alcohol faster and reduce complaints.

    Useful supplements are:

    • Ginger
    • Ginseng
    • Borage oil
    • Prickly pear cactus
    • Recover-E
    • Detox After Party
    • Paraxin

Recover-E is a supplement that contains a variety of minerals and vitamins that can help to recover faster from the annoying complaints that a hangover can give. Detox Afterparty contains herbs and extracts that support the liver. Paraxine is also an excellent supplement for a hangover, it promotes a faster breakdown of alcohol in the body.

Having a hangover is very annoying. But luckily you can do a lot yourself to reduce the complaints. Even if you feel bad, it's best to get something to eat and drink quickly. And with one of the natural supplements, you can support your body to recover even faster, so that you can also have a nice day the day after your party.
