CBD is more effective against anxiety than THC, study finds.
Is CBD better than THC for anxiety? According to recent research, yes. CBD reduces tension without the side effects often associated with THC, such as paranoia or an increased heart rate.
Why do people use cannabis for anxiety?
Anxiety disorders are a common mental health condition. According to the Trimbos Institute, about 15% of Dutch people will experience this at some point in their lives. In the United States, it is even the most common psychological disorder. Many people seek relief through medication or alternative substances such as cannabis. Anxiety is one of the three main medical reasons for using cannabis, alongside sleep problems and chronic pain [1].
Scientific research on THC and CBD for anxiety symptoms
A recent study conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder examined how the cannabis components CBD and THC influence anxiety. Led by Professor Cinnamon Bidwell, the study looked at both short-term and long-term effects. A total of 300 people participated, 258 of whom already had experience with cannabis.
Study setup
The participants used one of the following products:
- THC-dominant: 24% THC, 1% CBD
- CBD-dominant: 24% CBD, 1% THC
- Balanced: 12% THC, 12% CBD
Participants who had never used cannabis formed a control group. They did not use cannabis. Over the course of four weeks, participants used their chosen product about three times per week. Before and after each use, they were examined by a mobile lab at their home.

Results: CBD provides the strongest anxiety relief
All groups reported reduced anxiety, but the greatest improvement was seen among users of CBD-dominant cannabis. They also experienced fewer side effects such as paranoia. The data showed that CBD can effectively relieve acute anxiety symptoms [2].
Researcher Gregory Giordano concludes: “CBD-dominant strains are linked to a direct reduction in tension, which may lead to a long-term decrease in anxiety disorders.”
How does CBD reduce anxiety?
According to Professor Bidwell, CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties play a role. These compounds may reduce inflammation in the nervous system, which could help lower anxiety. THC also has an effect: a small dose may improve mood, but high doses can actually worsen anxiety [3].
