5 Unique Ways to Use Cannabis

The most well-known way to use weed is, of course, smoking it—but did you know there are many other ways to enjoy cannabis? You may not feel inclined to change your favorite method, but trying something new can be surprisingly refreshing—and possibly even better for your health. From cannabis sprays to weed chewing gum, this blog offers inspiration!

Unique ways to use cannabis differently

As mentioned, smoking (or vaping) is the most popular way to use cannabis. But a bit of variety can break the routine and lead to new experiences. Moreover, smoking comes with significant health risks. That alone can be a reason to try one of the unique cannabis use methods listed below.

Keep in mind that not all the methods mentioned will get you high. That depends on how the cannabinoids are absorbed into your body. Still, these alternatives may be interesting for certain groups of users, which is why we include them. Try something new and see which method suits you best!

Cannabis bath salts: Relaxation through your skin, without a psychoactive effect

If you're looking to relax in the tub, try adding cannabis bath salts to the water. It won't get you high, as your skin only absorbs a very small amount of cannabinoids. However, it can be soothing, and the cannabinoids and terpenes may have calming effects on your skin.

You may also experience some effect from the terpenes evaporating in the hot bathwater. These can be inhaled similarly to essential oils in a diffuser, possibly contributing to relaxation through scent. If you're hoping to get high or have the cannabinoids absorbed into your bloodstream, a bath is not the right method.

Weed chewing gum: Discreet dosing with potentially faster therapeutic effect

Looking for a less noticeable way to use cannabis? Weed chewing gum might be a good option. It’s a handy combination of an edible and an extract. The gum is not only tasty, but unlike typical edibles, the active ingredients are absorbed directly through the oral mucosa. That’s why cannabis gum is often used by those taking it for therapeutic reasons.

But the question is whether it's truly effective. At Wageningen University, research  was conducted where participants used CBD gum to treat IBS symptoms. The results were published on PubMed in 2022 (Effects of Cannabidiol Chewing Gum on Perceived Pain and Well-Being of Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients: A Placebo-Controlled Crossover Exploratory Intervention Study with Symptom-Driven Dosing).

32 women were given gum containing 50mg of CBD, which they could use up to 6 times a day to alleviate their pain symptoms. The group that received the CBD gum did not report fewer symptoms than the placebo group. There were large differences among participants—some reported benefits, others didn’t. It also turned out that participants didn’t use the gum as frequently as expected, suggesting that chewing gum may not be an appealing method of CBD intake for everyone.

    Weed powder

Weed powder is another alternative for consuming cannabis. It’s a full-spectrum powder, meaning it contains all cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes. It is water-soluble and can be added to food or drinks, making it suitable for edible-style consumption. The effects are similar to traditional edibles. Weed powder is easy to dose with a scale and is highly versatile.

User experiences and applications of weed powder

Weed powder is becoming increasingly popular among both recreational and medical users due to its versatility and precise dosing. Some users report that it's ideal for microdosing: dissolving a small amount in a smoothie or warm tea can promote calmness without necessarily causing a high. The powder is easily soluble, making it suitable for warm drinks like coffee or cocoa—though heat may affect the cannabinoid profile.

For recreational use, weed powder is a low-threshold way to create edibles without needing to heat or process cannabis yourself. For medical users, the precise and adjustable dosage makes it an attractive option tailored to individual needs.

The effects typically kick in between 30 to 90 minutes after consumption, depending on whether it's taken on an empty or full stomach, and on individual sensitivity to cannabinoids. It's important to start low and wait before taking more.

    Cannabis spray

Another way to use cannabis is via spray. These are available in various forms and formulations. A well-known example is Epidiolex, which is used to treat severe forms of epilepsy. But even if you don’t have a medical condition, a cannabis spray may be worth exploring.

Sprays allow for easy and accurate dosing and are discreet to use. You apply the dose by spraying it directly under your tongue, allowing the compounds to be absorbed quickly through the oral mucosa. If this sounds appealing, always check the ingredients. Some sprays contain only THC or CBD, while others offer a broad spectrum of cannabinoids.

THC or CBD tampons: Promising for menstrual pain, but not well-researched

Do you suffer from menstrual pain? You could use standard painkillers, but another option is tampons infused with THC or CBD. Although research is limited, the studies that do exist suggest these tampons may be effective. Results were published on Science Direct from a study(Efficacy and usability of a cannabidiol-infused tampon for the relief of primary dysmenorrhea) in March 2024.

The study found that CBD tampons significantly reduced pain in women suffering from severe menstrual cramps. They also caused fewer side effects than anti-inflammatory drugs. Whether THC tampons are equally effective remains unclear—very little research has been done on that.

Another question: can you get high from using a THC tampon? Researchers aren’t sure. It’s assumed that THC is less efficiently absorbed through the vagina than through oral ingestion. So getting high is considered unlikely.

    Alternatives to smoking weed

Smoking weed may be the go-to method for beginners, but as you've seen, there are many more options. If you've been using cannabis for a while and are looking for something different, try one of the methods mentioned above.

If you have health issues and want to use cannabis for medical purposes, always consult your doctor—especially if you're taking medication. It’s important to coordinate cannabis use with your healthcare provider to avoid possible interactions.

However you choose to use cannabis, be aware of potential side effects. According to Healthline, cannabis can impair your reaction time and judgment, suppress the immune system, and affect memory. If you’re particularly sensitive to cannabinoids, you may want to avoid THC altogether.
